3 Things That Will Be Required During A Diesel Conversion
ShareMany people prefer how a diesel engine functions compared to a gasoline engine, and there are conversion kits available designed to make this process easier to achieve. If you have decided to convert your gasoline engine over to a diesel engine, you will have quite a few changes that will have to be made. Take a look at some of the things that can be required when you are converting your engine from gas to diesel.
Fuel tanks may have to be relocated.
One thing many people fail to realize in the beginning stages of a diesel conversion project is that the fuel tank may have to be repositioned. It is not uncommon for the fuel tank to have to be relocated during a diesel conversion job because of the fact that:
- The fuel can be more combustible than gasoline
- The fuel may not need to be positioned by anything that generates heat
- The fuel tank may need to be larger or smaller
Not having the fuel tank relocated during the conversion can lead to dangerous consequences, so this is a part of the conversion that should never be neglected.
The exhaust system may have to be reconfigured.
Diesel engines, such as the Duramax HMMWV conversion engine, tend to release more exhaust than a regular gasoline engine. Plus, the fumes can be easier to ignite than gasoline fumes released from a traditional engine. Therefore, you will likely have to have the exhaust system reconfigured so you are not dealing with excess fumes or any dangerous exhaust that could catch fire because it comes in contact with a spark. The reconfiguration of the exhaust system can sometimes require that the body of the vehicle be lifted permanently so there is enough ground clearance as well.
A transmission cooler will have to be installed.
When you transition to a more powerful engine like a diesel engine, your transmission will run hotter than what it did when it left the factory with the intended engine because of the extra power. Therefore, you will need a new cooling system that is specifically in place to keep the transmission cool while it is in operation. Otherwise, your upgrade to a diesel engine will leave you with a transmission that won't last very long before it has to be replaced. Converting to a diesel engine like the Duramax diesel engine, especially in a larger vehicle like a Hummer or Humvee, will require you to have a substantially sized transmission cooling system installed.
